How to Keep Your New Year’s Resolutions and Turn Them Into Habits

New year’s resolution!

The start of the New Year truly feels like a fresh start and many of us are eager to change our ways. Unfortunately, as the weeks and months go by, our resolutions usually simmer away and nothing much becomes of them. We’ve all been there and it’s okay. This year is going to be different! We are giving you tips and tricks to help you turn your New Year’s resolutions into lifetime habits. Check them out:

Build up to it.
First and foremost, start small. If your resolution is to go to the gym 3 times per week and you currently don’t go to the gym at all, starting to go to the gym 3 times per week right on January 1st might not be the best idea. If your goal seems a little daunting at first, build up to it. Maybe go to the gym once this week and get yourself oriented with the services and classes that they have to offer. Then, go twice per week for a few weeks to get acclimated. Then, finally, start going three times per week. It’s much more effective to let yourself adjust to change rather than jumping in head first

Choose a measurable resolution.
If your resolution is to “work out more”, you may want to rethink this. How are you going to work out? What do you want to gain from working out? Where are you going to work out? How many times per week are you going to work out? These are all questions that you should be asking yourself. You want your goals to be specific and measurable because vague resolutions are very easy to quit. You need to be able to tell specifically if you are accomplishing your goals or not!

Believe in yourself and give yourself credit.
Maybe you have dropped the ball on some past resolutions, but let that stay in the past. It is a new year and you can do it! Speak positivity to yourself and forgive yourself if you slip up on your resolution. As long as you are doing your best, that’s already an improvement.

Make it enjoyable.
It may be possible to stick to your resolutions while doing something that you love! For example, if you want to lose weight, sitting in a sauna or going to a fun yoga class would help you achieve that goal while also being enjoyable. If you hate running, don’t make a New Year’s resolution to start running! Choose enjoyable tactics to help you reach your goal in order to make it into a habit that you look forward to rather than dread.

Put reminders in your phone.
Sometimes resolutions fizzle out simply because we get busy, forget, and lose sight of why we set our goals in the first place. For this reason, try putting reminders in your phone at the beginning of the year for sometime in March, June, September, and December. In your reminder, ask yourself if you’ve been keeping up with your resolution, state a reason why you set that goal, and give yourself some encouragement. It might look something like, “Did you go to bed by 10pm last night? Remember your New Year’s resolution to go to bed earlier so that you aren’t so tired at work. You can do it!” This will remind you of your resolution every couple of months and encourage you to stick to it!

We hope these tips will help you to find the perfect New Year’s resolutions for you and stick to them! If you are looking for habits that will help you achieve your goals in 2018, check out our last blog post. Here’s to accomplishing our goals in 2019!
