Traditional saunas are just that: traditional! Traditional saunas originated in Finland and go back as far as 5 BC. In this type of sauna, rocks are heated over an electric heater (originally a wood fire) in a wood-walled unit until the temperature reaches up to 180-200º F. This heating process takes anywhere from 10-30 minutes, depending on the size of the sauna and power of the heater. A traditional sauna offers a damp heat, as it offers the option to pour ladles of water over the hot rocks to create steam. The steam can be particularly enjoyable when it is infused with essential oils such as eucalyptus or lavender!

If steam isn’t your thing, an infrared sauna might be for you. This type of sauna has newer technology than a traditional sauna and offers a dry heat. They use infrared light to create heat within the sauna. Infrared light molecules vibrate at the same frequency as your skin, which means that this type of sauna is more effective at warming you up to your core. Because of

this, infrared saunas only reach a temperature of about 140º F. While you are missing out on the steam with this type of sauna, you can still enjoy aromatherapy if you choose to hang an aroma holder on the interior walls.
